Quite often when I’m walking home from work, I pass children selling various treats. Usually kool-aid. Occasionally pop. If I have change, I buy something, but not often. One of the things I notice is that all the neighbor kids are out there trying to mooch from these entrepreneurs. Pouting little girls, beggars, and on one occasion two older girls telling their brothers they were going to cream them if they didn’t get a handout. None of these salesmen told those juvenile panhandlers to stick-it.
During summer-break between fifth and sixth grade, my best friend, Ming Yang, and I decided we were going to sell lemonade. If it weren’t for Ming, I would’ve caved, but he was hard-nosed and made everyone pay including his parents. We made a couple of bucks and spent it on rulers and circle-templates (we were drafting-nerds).
Eventually, he would get part-time jobs so he could buy more stuff. I moved two years later and I have no idea what happened to him.
This strip is part one of four looking into the editorials Jack Klugmann and the SLTrib have run for during the last two weeks regarding deficit-spending as a solution to the oncoming depression. Both are smart and I respect their opinions, but I don’t buy it. This week, I am going to tell a story. I guess if you were going to be technical, this would be act 1 of three. I like telling stories and so, I hope this works out.
I am not an economist in any way, but the stuff I’m reading in the paper just doesn’t make any sense. Many of the editorial cartoons in the Trib (yes, much of my opinion’s based on political cartoons — when I stationed in South Korea in ’88, I had to rely on the comics, particularly Bloom County and Doonsbury, for election information (I laughed, but never agreed, but they weren’t censored like the Korean Papers and Stars & Stripes)) are just wrong. Now, I can write a long essay or argue in the online forums with the best, but how does one draw it?
This is where my favorite political cartoonists kill me (even if they’re dead wrong–my strip sucked because it was heavy handed and didactic).
Bagley’s 06/27/2010 entry, on this subject, is the best (still wrong). The trick is to do what he does then, right? Harder than you think. I took two days thinking about how I would do this while looking at other cartoonists and how they handled it. None of them did a narrative or were very attached to verbiage. Bagley was long in fact. This is hard for me, because I write plot-first. I also do not think republicans or democrats are villains, idiots are (again different). So, I struggle. I have a second version of this I’m doing next week. It is focused on the characters, narrative, and plot. I think the difference for now will have to be: I do strips, they do gag-boxes.

Recently, Utah reduced the State Liquor Store hours and closed one store. I do not drink and do not encourage drinking, but I care less if someone does or if they have access to booze. Booze laws in Utah are stupid. Sure, I understand why the laws are there, but the folks who want to drink are going to regardless of legislative prudishness. I like the idea of knowing who is buying booze and keeping it out of the hands of shoplifting teenagers.
Most of the bishops I know are great guys and wouldn’t do anything like this. The bishop depicted here represents the Latter-day Saints who feel it’s their responsibility to regulate everyone around them. Today, on a forum about politics in Nevada, someone commented that very few of the cultist-mormons in Utah are found there. The poster was not saying all mormons are cultists, just some of them. True. It is the cultist-mormons that drive me nuts. Raising my kids, I would point them out calling them mo-clones.
I though libertarian tea-partiers were all about free markets.
Regarding the comic, I am very happy with how this turned out. I tried some new things and decided fixing the lettering would take entirely too long. I am going to continue lettering, but if it takes too long to fix excessive rastoring, then I am just going to type in the lettering. I might decide to buy that one font anyway. Editing the comic is taking much more time then I want to take.

In the Salt Trib, there was an article discussing a new ad campaign by the National Democratic Party (DNC) accusing Republicans of having too cozy a relationship with Big Oil. I found this particularly hypocritical. True the GOP is dirty with oil money, but the same is true with the DNC. Stupid really.
If they wanted to do this right the DNC should open up regarding their own culpablility and then build a national dialogue. This would be the smart thing to do and it would also show a certain level of integrity that neither party currently exhibits. There is something else out there. The desire to switch to alternative energy is growing. Eventually, we’ll be able to stop using fossil fuel all together. I am excited about the capacity of solar and wind (and even geo-thermal). However, the rest of the nation might not be as excited – neither are yet proven. I think being able to switch over like we did to oil, through commerce instead of government regulation, would be preferential. However, constituent groups think the government should step in where the markets drag their feet. I disagree. The motive is correct, but this implementation would blow. Honestly, smaller government is better.
Look at the VA and Post Office. Two organizations that are actually quite great, but private industry does do a better job. I don’t want government running everything, because then everything will be run with the same level of proficiency as these two organizations.

Trying to get the Father’s Day comic to post drove me right up the wall. I am still seeing multiple copies of the comic in the comic folder even though I’ve deleted it several times. I was hoping to have an easy go at this. This is two days in a row of frustration dealing with getting comics to upload. I hope tomorrow will be better.
It does not mater that iTunes is playing Symphony No. 5 in c minor, OP. 67 I Allegro Con Brio. This always gets me worked up anyway. I don’t listen to classical much, but this popped up on random.
Re: Father’s Day. I went to my dad’s today and had steaks, brats, and potato bar. As always the food was great and in fact the steaks were perfect. Nate was there and man he went off the second we started talking politics. He is like the second speaker in Panel One, Johnson. Open minded, nice, and welcoming to everyone, but he has been having trouble finding a job and his friends and fiance are a bit liberal. Nate’s getting married in August and will probably end up a house-husband like Johnson. I think he feels persecuted. I don’t help, but I didn’t want to fight with him. I let him vent.
Rob came with me. He mostly hung out with my sister and her husband. Anyway, it was great fun and them I came home to bang my head on the wall trying to upload content.
Aaron.
